Seasonal homes are not spread evenly within a state, resulting in considerable differences in the seasonality amongst the local economies.
Of 3,143 counties nationwide, fewer than 300 have at least 20 percent of their housing stock in seasonal homes. Hamilton County, New York fewer leads the nation with 75%, followed by Forest County, PA (74%) and Alpine County, CA (70%). Barnstable County’s 36% ranks it 82nd.
Barnstable County is 7th in the nation in the absolute number of seasonal homes and 5th for ratio of seasonal homes to land area. Presently 36% of the housing units on the Cape are seasonal, up from 32% in 2000. In the 1960s, before the significant population and residential construction booms of the 1970s and 80s, 50% of the housing stock in Barnstable County was seasonal units.
